Pennies remember 9/11 victims

Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 | 8:45 a.m.

Each class at John F. Mendoza Elementary School collected a penny in remembrance of each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001, an effort that culminated in a $907.68 donation to the American Red Cross.

The penny drive was the idea of third grade teacher Charles Michel, who was looking for a way to help children understand the number of lives lost, Michel said. Michel's idea became Making Cents of 9-11. Each classroom raised 2,998 pennies.
