COMMISSION DISTRICT A

Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 | 1:56 a.m.

Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, a Republican, faces Independent American William Boyd Ballard II, a Henderson resident, in the race in District A.

Woodbury, a 26-year resident of Boulder City who has held this seat since 1981, garnered 82 percent of the vote in a two-person GOP primary. He served as commission chairman in 1989-90 and 1999-2000, and earned another four-year term in 2000 by collecting 63 percent of the vote in the general election.

Woodbury, 59, a lawyer, has been a member of the Regional Transportation Commission since 1985 and chairman since 1991. He also served on the Regional Flood Control Board.

A Las Vegas High graduate, he earned his law degree from Stanford Law School after graduating magna cum laude from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in political science.

His platform includes protecting Rural Neighborhood Preservation Areas.

"I will continue to be an advocate for preserving the integrity of existing neighborhoods against encroachment by incompatible zone changes and for preventing significant increases in property taxes," he said.

He also has served as chairman of the Big Bend Water District Board of Trustees, the Clark County Liquor and Gaming Licensing Board and the Clark County Air Quality Management Board.

No Democrats are running this year.

Ballard did not respond to a Sun questionnaire seeking biographical information and his political platform. Attempts to reach him for an interview were not successful.

The district, which has 9,800 more Republicans than Democrats, generally includes southwest Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Searchlight, Laughlin, Bunkerville, parts of Overton and southern Mesquite.
