Tuesday last day to register to vote

Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 | 9:26 a.m.

Tuesday is the last day people can register for the Nov. 2 general election, and potential voters must visit the Clark County election department offices in person.

"This is their last chance," Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said.

The offices are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at the Clark County Election Center, 965 Trade Drive, Suite A, or the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, on the first floor.

First-time registrants in Nevada need to show identification either when they register or the first time they vote at the polls.

The number of new voters continues to skyrocket in Clark County, Lomax said. More than 90,000 people have registered in the county since the close of registration for the Sept. 7 state primary.

There are now more than 685,000 registered voters in the county, compared with the roughly 593,000 people registered for the primary.

Before the primary, Democrats in Clark County, who comprised 269,000 voters, outnumbered registered Republicans, who accounted for another 224,000 voters in late August.

Statewide numbers were not available this morning, as officials in Secretary of State Dean Heller's office will not begin tallying the forms until voter registration is complete, a spokeswoman said.

In the 2000 presidential election, more than 878,000 Nevada residents were registered to vote. Of those, roughly 366,000 were registered Republican and 365,000 were Democrats, according to the Secretary of State's office.
