Walk for Down syndrome planned

The Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada will hold the 2004 National Buddy Walk beginning with registration at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by the walk at 5:30 p.m. at Discovery Park, 2011 Paseo Verde, Henderson, in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Participants include people with Down syndrome, their families, friends, teachers, co-workers and other supporters.

All funds raised through the Buddy Walk support both local and national programs.

Veterans' art will be displayed

The second annual Veteran Artists and Artist in Residence exhibition will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Nevada State Veterans Home, 100 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.

A display of paintings created by the residents has been assembled. The subjects range from paintings of Iwo Jima to the American symbol, the bald eagle, and Las Vegas show girls.

Athena Peters, artist in residence at the facility, will unveil the large mural she has completed for the veterans home.

Refreshments will be served.

Hospital to host annual health fair

MountainView Hospital's annual health fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the hospital's main lobby, 3100 N. Tenaya Way.

Services include free vision checks, lung capacity tests, glucose checks, varicose vein information, depression and blood pressure checks, body fat analysis, grip strength and cholesterol tests, sleep disorder assessment, and flu shots ($15)(limited quantities available).

The event is free and open to the public.

Dance Charisma and the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association

is hosting Dance for the Cure from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in UNLV's Moyer Student Union Ballroom. Call 656-8690.

The Hispanic International Day parade

and block party will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on Third Street beginning at Coolidge Avenue.

The National Park Service is presenting a guided hike

at 9 a.m. Saturday to Horse Thief Canyon. It begins at Lake Mead's Alan Bible Visitor Center off U.S. 93.
