Columnist Muriel Stevens: Bellagio basks in top ranking

After receiving word that Bellagio was ranked as the top hotel in the Americas and in the Caribbean by Conde Nast Traveller (United Kingdom) readers, Bellagio Vice President of Hotel Operations Randy Morton had this to say:

"To be chosen No. 1 in the Americas and Caribbean by people who travel the world extensively is a singular honor; an honor that confirms the commitment our employees make to each and every guest that walks through Bellagio's doors. Given that the resorts in this select group are far smaller than Bellagio, this ranking for superior service is truly a mark of distinction."

Winners were announced in the magazine's seventh anniversary Reader's Travel Awards issue. On a scale of 1 to 100, Bellagio scored high marks for location (95.56), leisure facilities (93.33) and shopping (88.89), winning the top spot with an overall score of 91.46.

The opening of Bellagio's Spa Tower in December will add 928 room suites, an expansion of the luxe spa and salon, additional meeting and convention space, more retail and a dramatic new dining experience, Sensi.

2004 Neiman Marcus Christmas Book: Long before a Neiman Marcus store appeared in Las Vegas I shopped NM by mail. I still do. One of my most eagerly awaited Christmas catalogs is the world-famous Neiman Marcus Christmas Book.

With merchandise that ranges in price from millions of dollars to less than $20, choosing gift items is a cinch.

The most expensive item in the 2004 Christmas Book is a zeppelin for $10 million. The least expensive is an etched-glass serving platter for $18. And, as always, there are limited editions of unique gifts that can't be found elsewhere, such as an exquisitely crafted custom suit of armor for $20,000. Included are two sword-fighting lessons and a steel display stand.

Don't delay ordering. There are only 20 of these steely, flexible, functional suits. For more information and to order, call (877) 966-4438.

Gifts $50 and under are always included in the Christmas Book. Among the exclusive Neiman Marcus items in this popular price range, you'll find a Reed & Barton dove music box that plays a romantic tune; a crystal and silver sweetener holder inscribed, "You can never be too rich or too thin"; and an Atlas bottle stopper with a glass world.

Of course, it's the big-bucks gifts that get all the attention. Prices for a his-and-hers bowling center that includes the whole package (a four-lane, state-of-the art bowling center, shoes, balls, lessons from professional bowlers, customized bowling shirts and more) start at $1 million.

Or how about a Neiman Marcus Limited Edition 2005 Maserati Quattroporte for $125,000, or a Neiman Marcus exclusive three-wheeler trike for adults for $65,000 or a jewelled Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head by Jay Strongwater, hand-crusted with Swarovski crystals and signed by Strongwater? These exclusive baubles are $8,000 each. Jeweling was done by Strongwater.

The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book will be sent to 2 million homes in the United States and abroad. A 2004 NM Christmas Book may be ordered for $15 by calling (800) 634-6267.
