Citizens panel OKs more flood control funding

Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 | 8:49 a.m.

A Clark County Regional Flood Control District citizens group on Monday voted to allocate more than $357,000 more to the district's 10-year construction plan.

The Citizens Advisory Committee's approval, which will go before the full district board on Nov. 13, recommends a shift of roughly $264,000 to flood control improvements to the Duck Creek tributary, which runs from Eldorado Lane to Spencer Street in southern Las Vegas. The move also allocates $93,000 to flood control improvements in Indian Springs.

Both actions will be funded through the county sales tax, which in September brought in roughly $5.8 million for the district, said Kevin Eubanks, assistant general manager for the district.

The $264,000 increase pushes the total cost for the Duck Creek Project to roughly $344,000, almost five times the initial estimate, according to the district. The additional money will be used for design, right-of-way acquisition and environmental studies along the corridor.

In other action, the committee approved a delay for construction of flood control improvements from Cheyenne Avenue to Lone Mountain Road in northwest Las Vegas. The delay, which will also go before the full flood control board next month, pushes the estimated completion of the project to Nov. 1, 2005.

Since its inception in 1985, the Flood Control District has allocated more than $1 billion in flood control projects, Gale Fraser, the district's general manager, said.
