Ex-administrators teaching math at charter school

Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 | 10:55 a.m.

Former Moapa Valley High School Principal Daniel Reese and former Clark County School District athletics director Larry McKay, both facing charges of felony theft, are teaching math to students at Odyssey Charter High School.

Susan D'Aniello, principal of Odyssey's high school program, confirmed this morning that both Reese and McKay were employed by the school. She declined to comment except to say that the school's board of directors " is aware of the (criminal charges) and we're following the situation."

McKay was arrested in August and charged with four counts of felony theft relating to his administration of a summer basketball tournament that was held in school gymnasiums but was not sponsored by the district. According to court documents, McKay is charged with improperly using funds from the athletics department budget to pay school police officers to serve as security for the event.

Reese was arrested July 29 and charged with misappropriating more than $10,000 in student-generated funds. Reese has repaid the missing money, school police said.

Charter schools receive the same per-pupil funding as regular district schools but are given more leeway in curriculum and staffing. Odyssey, founded in 1999, provides distance education learning to about 1,200 students in grades K-12.
