Tribe makes progress on new casino efforts

Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 | 9:43 a.m.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. -- An Indian tribe with land in Arizona and California has struck a deal to open a new casino in Blythe, Calif.

The City Council in Blythe approved a memorandum of understanding that lays out details for the Colorado River Indian Tribes' casino.

Blythe Assistant City Manager Charles "Butch" Hall said the city and tribe are ready to go forward.

The city would provide police and fire protection and city officials and the tribe would determine the cost of covering the casino's needs.

Under the deal, the tribe agreed to restrict construction of any hotel rooms at the casino for a minimum of four years and, to offset any loss in tax revenue, a share of gaming revenue will be given to the city.

Blythe is off Interstate 10 on the Arizona-California state line.
