Letter: Flat tax best, but unlikely to pass
Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 | 8:41 a.m.
Jordan Bodenstein's Nov. 11 letter supporting a flat tax was right on message.
I also support a single, flat income tax, regardless of family size, with only one exemption. The first $25,000 of all single, or $40,000 of married (combined), taxpayer income would be exempt, and this baseline would be adjusted annually for inflation. To keep the transition tax revenue neutral, most studies show the new flat tax would be about 28 percent of all income above this baseline. This is simple, direct and almost unbiased taxation.
Good luck getting a flat tax through Congress, though. There aren't any votes-for-promises in this tax package.
