Letter: More moderately priced housing urgently needed
Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004 | 8:58 a.m.
My "luxury apartment" is already overpriced, and I have just received notice that the rent will increase next year. The powers that be in this city must stand up to the developers and out-of-state investors and tell them that the rights of the people who actually reside in this city supersedes their desire to make pots of money. And please, don't waste everyone's time with expensive, worthless studies on the matter; you know what the problem is, just fix it. I am certainly all for capitalism and I understand the theory of supply and demand, but enough is enough.
Give incentives to developers who build moderately priced houses and apartments. Limit how much out of state investors can purchase. Make it more difficult for apartments to be converted into overly priced condominiums. If something isn't done soon, there will be no one living in this city except rich people. When that happens, who will teach their children, police their neighborhoods, serve them their morning lattes? Worse, who will take care of the tourists?
