Man killed as he leaves driveway
An 80-year-old man was killed Sunday morning when his car was hit as he pulled out of his driveway, according to Metro Police.
Police reported that John Taylor was pulling out onto Windmill Lane east of Eastern Avenue when he apparently failed to yield and drove his 1982 Mercury Marquis pulled into the path of a 1986 Buick Riviera driven by 19-year-old Crystal Bertsch.
Taylor was pronounced dead at University Medical Center, and Bertsch suffered moderate injuries, police said.
Stores selling alcohol to kids cited
Henderson Police said they checked 92 stores on Saturday to see if they would sell alcoholic beverages to minors, and five of them did.
Employees at those stores were given citations for violating the Henderson Municipal Code and state law prohibiting sale of alcohol to people younger than 21.
The department did not announce the names of the stores that were found to be noncompliant.
Police conducted the sting operation with four underage volunteers acting as buyers.
Crash slows traffic on U.S. 93
Traffic on a busy stretch of U.S. 93 slowed to a crawl after a tanker truck carrying 9,300 gallons of propane overturned near Kingman, Ariz., according to the Arizona Highway Patrol.
The accident slowed traffic on the road, a key artery into Las Vegas, for almost 12 hours, Steve Volden, a spokesman for the Arizona Highway Patrol, said. The accident occurred about 2 a.m. Friday near Highway 68 and restricted traffic to private passenger cars while crews transferred the propane into smaller containers, he said.
Tractor-trailers were detoured onto a nearby secondary road.
Crews at the scene quickly extinguished a small fire that broke out after the accident, which is still under investigation, he said.
No injuries were reported, Volden said.
The roughly 30-mile stretch reopened about 1:50 p.m. Friday, Volden said.
