UNLV play an ode to the outskirts

Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 | 8:35 a.m.

A tornado blows through town forcing a family and two strangers into a cellar to ride out the storm in "Starvation Flats," a new play by UNLV graduate student Amy Michelle Smith.

The drama, set on a farm in a small town on the outskirts of Iowa, is being presented in the Paul Harris Theatre in the Ham Fine Arts Building.

When the family emerges from the cellar, the house is gone, the car is gone and the group is faced with the past and the future and the revelations learned while weathering the storm.

Steve Rapella, who directed last season's "How I learned to Drive" and performed the lead in "A View From the Bridge," is directing "Starvation Flats."

The cast includes Melony Franchini ("Proof"), Jason Lockart ("Harlequinn Brill"), Allison Gifford ("Harlequin Brill"), graduate student Joan Mullaney and 7-year-old Sebastian Fitzgerald.

Performances are 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5. For more information, call 895-2787.
