Letter: Dress code fight is not productive
Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004 | 9:05 a.m.
In light of underfunded, underachieving Clark County schools, why would any parent or student impede progress?
Liberty High School is trying to make a positive difference by having a dress code and enforcing its standards. As a former member of the Nevada State Board of Education, I can tell you that Harvard University did a study on uniforms in schools and it showed that students benefited by being on the same playing field with each other. Also, teachers had no preconceived opinions based on dress.
Kim Jacobs, who was suspended from Liberty High for defying the dress code with parental permission, and who has recently be re-admitted by federal court order, should take up another cause. Why not take a stand on child abuse, drunken driving or the plight of endangered animals? This battle against a positive school effort is not productive.
