Gay Youth Prom planned at church
The Gay and Lesbian Community Center will be sponsoring the third annual Gay Youth Prom from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2000 S. Maryland Parkway.
Officials of the organization said the prom provides a safe and accepting environment for gay and lesbian youth.
The Royal Sovereign Court of the Desert Empire will be crowning the prom Kings and Queens.
The event will feature dancing and food.

Powwow will honor veterans
The first Las Vegas Intertribal Powwow honoring all veterans will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday at the Silver Bowl Sports Complex, 6800 E. Russell Road.
The purpose of the event is to build a sense of community among American Indians in Southern Nevada.
The free event is open to the public and will feature food and craft booths, dance and drumming demonstrations and competitions, processions and awards. There is a $10 entry fee for the drum and dance contests.
The event is sponsored by the Las Vegas Intertribal Powwow and Clark County Parks and Community Services.

Japanese speech contest scheduled
The region's first Japanese speech contest for high school and college students will be hosted by the Community College of Southern Nevada at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Student Services Building, Room D152 at the Charleston campus, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd.
High school and Japanese Saturday School students at three levels will compete in the morning. CCSN and UNLV students will compete at two levels at 1 p.m. Participants are students learning the Japanese language and culture.

The second annual Toys for Tots
collection program sponsored by Sammy's Woodfired Pizza will run Nov. 26 through Dec. 17. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at both locations, 6500 W. Sahara Ave., and 4300 E. Sunset Road, Henderson. Each customer who brings in a toy donation will receive a free giant messy sundae. For more information, call 254-5704.
Metro Police will be partnering
with representatives of Project Child Safe to distribute free gun locks between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at Wal-Mart, 4505 W. Charleston Blvd., to promote gun safety and awareness. For more information, call 229-3080.
