A local high school principal has been honored with three national awards for his innovative work in education.

Robert A. Gerye is the founding principal at Spring Valley High School where he has placed students in smaller learning communities. The school opened in August.

Gerye was previously the founding principal at the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, which opened in 1993 and has received national recognition.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals awarded Gerye the Nevada principal of the year award.

Gerye also received this month the Jeffrey Lawrence Award for lifetime achievement from the International Network of Schools for the Advancement of the Arts and the Washburn University Fellows Award for lifetime achievement in education from his alma mater.

Gerye dedicated the awards to his family and the teachers who have worked with him.
