Letter: Merging CCSN, NSC a step back

Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004 | 9:04 a.m.

The vast majority of states have successful three-tier higher education structures that serve their students well. When Nevada State College at Henderson was founded, our state joined this national, well-proven three-tier system.

To go backward and combine our state college with the Henderson campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada would not be in keeping with the primary goal of our University and Community College System of Nevada, which is to provide a quality, diversified education.

The state college was formed to meet the state's long-term need for diversified educational opportunities. The well-qualified staffs at the both the state college and CCSN recognize that it would not be prudent or educationally sound to combine the two campuses.

Nevada State College staff and students are poised to move Nevada higher education to the next level. To stand in their way would be simply wrong. All the college needs is a permanent president committed to staying with the excellent staff and developing the college for the long term.

When this happens, the college will flourish even more. It will become a shining super star we will all continue to be proud of.

RON MEEK Editor's note: Ron Meek, who holds a doctorate's degree in education, is past president of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce Executive Board and is a former provost of CCSN's Henderson campus. He is currently the site manager for CCSN's Nellis Air Force Base Center.
