Pedestrian killed by motor home

A 36-foot motor home struck and killed a pedestrian walking along a road congested with traffic in North Las Vegas on Monday afternoon, police said.

The victim, described as a male in his 40s, was not carrying identification, North Las Vegas Police Sgt. Dan Ewing said.

The motor home was driving eastbound on Cheyenne Avenue a little after noon on Monday when it struck the victim, who was walking in the opposite direction on the same side of the street, Ewing said.

The road had been narrowed because of construction in the area. Ewing attributed the accident to "pedestrian error" because the victim was walking on a road where "there was no room for a pedestrian," he said.

"We have no idea why the pedestrian was walking on that road, but he smelled of alcohol," Ewing said.

The driver of the motor home, Jackie Phillips, gave police a formal statement and was not arrested, Ewing said.

He added that the police are considering charging Phillips with one traffic violation but declined to say exactly what that charge might be.

North Las Vegas Police needed to consult with the district attorney before proceeding with any charges against Phillips, Ewing said. The motor home had Oregon license plates.

Crews have been working on Cheyenne avenue for three months, Ewing said, adding that there have been several "fender benders" along the street since construction started in August.
