Veterans Day, a day to honor men and women who have served and continue to serve this great country.
During an outdoors television show interview that I had with the Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America, I discovered there are a number of members within this veterans group who have an interest in forming an archery shoot.
For this idea to become a reality, the Nevada PVA would need an archery range willing to hold the event and interested sportsmen and sportswomen who enjoy the sport of archery to step up and volunteer their time to help coordinate the activity, supply archery equipment and assist during the archery shoot.
The Nevada PVA is one of 34 chapters of the PVA in America, with nearly 200 members and 150 associate members.
The Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America Inc. is dedicated to improving and ensuring the quality of life for American veterans who have suffered spinal cord injury or disease resulting in paralysis.
Their purpose is to assist in the fulfillment of the need for health and well being for all of the members through education, location of resources, medical research, physical and psychological therapy, cooperation with other corporations, groups and institutions engaged in similar activities and the advancement of wheelchair athletic participation for the purpose of improved health, medical prevention and a better quality of life.
The PVA members already compete and participate in the following wheelchair events throughout the year: fishing, trapshooting, hunting, basketball, bowling, softball and football. With help, the sport of archery could possibly be added to their wheelchair sports and recreation program.
If you have an idea or are interested in finding out how you might be able to help, contact the Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America. The office is at 1630 Sunset Drive, the telephone number is 646-0040. Go online to www.nevadapva.org.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Boulder Beach Picnic area and will clean and beautify the picnic, campground, and beach areas.
All volunteers will receive free entrance into the park and are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen and gloves. A light breakfast, water, lunch and a T-shirt will be provided to all volunteers.
The National Park Service requests that all interested volunteers register by calling volunteer program manager Nancy Bernard at 293-8714.
