Letter: Elderly drivers an increasing threat
Monday, Nov. 8, 2004 | 9:06 a.m.
Elderly drivers have more accidents per mile driven than any other group except young teenagers. We don't license 14-year-olds because, while they have the physical skills to drive, their judgment is often lacking.
Elderly drivers generally have good judgment, but often lack physical skills such as reaction time to drive safely. Many are also on medications that dull the senses.
In spite of the statistics, few regulators advocate regular and comprehensive testing of elderly drivers because they fear their clout at the ballot box. Taking away an elder's "freedom" is often viewed as more serious than saving lives.
Our elder population is increasing every year. Without aggressive action to take incompetent drivers off our roads, it's likely that deaths and injuries will also increase.
