Letter: Bush won’t be specific about Social Security
Monday, Nov. 8, 2004 | 9:05 a.m.
Has anybody else noticed that George W. Bush has never once said how he intends to fund his ill-conceived plan to privatize part of Social Security by setting up "personal retirement accounts" for young workers. Even when directly asked, the president deftly changes the subject or launches into a dissertation about the "benefits" of such an idea.
Well, I have noticed and am pretty disturbed that none of the media or even the Democrats are holding Bush's feet to the fire on this subject. Bush claims no current retiree's benefits will be changed, but does that mean he intends to raise the payroll tax?
There's not a chance that he will do such a responsible thing, so that means either a cut in current benefits or a huge increase in borrowing.
