Group plans to file marijuana petition
Monday, Nov. 8, 2004 | 10:55 a.m.
A group collecting signatures on an initiative petition to legalize possession of an ounce of marijuana for adults plans to file its petition Tuesday.
Larry Sandell, campaign manager for the Committee to Regulate and Control Marijuana, said today the organization has more than 55,000 signatures and was still collecting more today.
The petition needs 51,337 valid signatures to put the issue before the 2005 Legislature. The petitions will be filed in Clark, Washoe, Douglas and Lyon counties and in Carson City.
If the group has the required number of valid signatures, then the 2005 Legislature must consider the issue in the first 40 days of its session. If the Legislature refuses to approve the petition, it goes on the ballot.
