Summary Box: GOP crossover votes for Reid, not Kerry

SURVEY SAYS: One in four Nevada voters supported both Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat, and President George Bush, a Republican.

COUNTING COUNTIES: Reid won a career-best nine of Nevada's 17 counties, including GOP-leaning Washoe County for the first time, while John Kerry captured only Democrat-dominated Clark County.

THE NORTH: Democrats poured unprecedented resources into Washoe County for Kerry, who lost to Bush by just 4 percent after Bush beat Al Gore there by nearly 10 percent in 2000.

THE SOUTH: Republicans made a surprising showing for Bush in Clark County, where Kerry beat Bush by about 5 percent after Gore had defeated him there by about 7 percent.

IN BETWEEN: Democratic gains stopped at Washoe County's borders, as Bush carried the rest of northern Nevada by about the same margin he did against Gore, 16 percent.

TWO VIEWS: Among Reid-Bush backers, 73 percent said things are going very well or somewhat well in Iraq today, while 90 percent of the Reid-Kerry backers said things there are going somewhat badly or very badly.

QUOTABLE: "Rural counties are where you can make up a great deal if they like you, if they trust you. They trusted George W. Bush." - Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev.
