O’Callaghan among those to be honored in veterans ceremony

The late Mike O'Callaghan, Sun executive editor and former governor, will be among those honored Saturday during Henderson's early Veterans Day ceremony.

O'Callaghan, a veteran of the Marine Corps, Army and Air Force, is one of 28 names to be added to the Henderson Veterans Memorial Wall, which honors more than 1,400 Henderson veterans.

O'Callaghan, who lost a leg in battle during the Korean War, was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with a V and Purple Heart during his military career.

His son Tim O'Callaghan, co-publisher of the Henderson Home News, will present the ceremonial address.

The Basic High School Marine Corps JROTC will present the memorial ceremony's colors. The Henderson Civic Symphony will conduct a musical salute.

The memorial wall was dedicated in 1994. It honors all Henderson Vietnam War veterans and deceased war veterans who lived in Henderson prior to 1980. The wall is maintained by the American War Mothers, who will give a special wreath presentation at the ceremony.

Henderson will host the ceremony next to Henderson City Hall at 240 Water St. All are invited to the ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m.

Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage on the corner of Basic Road and Lead Street or in the lot off Water Street.
