Majority leader says Senate won’t tackle track gambling

LANSING, Mich. -- The state Senate won't deal with slot machines at horse tracks during the Legislature's "lame duck" session, Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema said Thursday.

Sikkema added that the Senate has plenty of less glamorous subjects it wants to tackle before it wraps up business for the two-year session early next month.

Legislation on slot machines at horse tracks is now is stalled in a joint House-Senate conference committee. Sikkema said Michigan voters decided that issue when they passed Proposal 1 on Tuesday.

Proposal 1 requires that casino-style gaming be approved by voters at both the state and local levels.
