Shell from grenade found at Wrigley
A groundskeeper found a rusted, hollowed-out shell of a grenade in right field at Chicago's Wrigley Field. After the grenade was found Tuesday morning, police bomb and arson investigators were called to examine the device. They found it to be empty and harmless.
"It's a dud, just like the Cubs were," police spokesman Pat Camden said Wednesday.
Investigators said there was no way to determine how the device ended up on the field.
Death a mystery
The official cause of death was still unknown today in the case of Nashville Predators center Sergei Zholtok, 31, who died in Latvia after becoming ill while playing. European news organizations were saying he died from cardiac arrhythmia.
Missouri sanctioned
Missouri's men's team was placed on three years' probation for recruiting violations.
Hamm pulls out tie
Mia Hamm's goal with 20 seconds to play lifted the U.S. women to a 1-1 tie with Denmark at East Rutherford, N.J.
Agassi appeals fine
Andre Agassi today in London appealed a court ruling that he had to pay $50,700 in taxes on sponsorship money he earned when playing Wimbledon and other British tournaments.
Birdstone retired
Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone was retired after chipping a bone in his left front ankle Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
UNLV gets second
The UNLV men's team ended up second by three strokes to Hawaii in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate at Kahuku, Hawaii.
