Kerry reaches out to Nevadans

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 | 8:24 a.m.

Less than four hours before the 7 p.m. closing of Nevada polls, Democratic candidate John Kerry spoke live via satellite on local news KLAS Channel 8 in an attempt to snag last-minute voters.

Kerry campaign spokeswoman Laura Capps said the senator was doing the interviews in the "battlegrounds of battlegrounds."

During the short interview, Kerry touched on various topics, from Yucca Mountain to prescription drug prices. Kerry also spoke about why he believes he would be the better choice for the Silver State.

"In Nevada, you know what George Bush is going to do with Yucca Mountain," Kerry said. "If you don't want Yucca Mountain to be a nuclear repository, depository site, I'm the person to vote for. I voted against it in the Senate and it's not going to happen on my watch."

If elected president, Kerry said he would "unite America" and put the nation "back to work."

"The president who said he was a uniter has the most divided America in our history," he said. "I know how to bring people together and I will unite this country.

"We gotta put America back to work, provide health care, hunt down and kill the terrorists wherever they are and build strong alliances to make America safer."

When asked when he'd be back in Las Vegas, the senator said he didn't know, but would be pleased to talk to the media whenever he returns.

"President Bush has never met with the Nevada press personally," he said. "When I do come back, I'd be delighted to meet with you."
