Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
The recent Canyon Gate Country Club's Men's Member/Guest Golf Tournament was, as usual, an outstanding success, with the largest field that ever participated avowing that without doubt, it was the best ever.
Format for this event saw the six two-man teams in each flight play three nine-hole match play events with the points winners in each flight then going forward in a shootout to determine overall winners.
Jim May's team won that honor after an extremely close tussle.
Flight winners were as follows:
Ben Hogan Flight victors with 27 points was the Larry Keever team.
Eking out a very narrow victory in the Jack Nicklaus Flight was Harland Braaten's team with a score of 25.5.
With an incredible score of 32, and coming away with the Gary Player Flight was Jim Villella's team.
The overall victors, May's twosome, eked out a narrow victory in the Sam Snead Flight, coming in with 25.
Gene Sarazen Flight winner was Bill McDonald's team.
In the Lee Trevino Flight, Jim Sides' team prevailed with 26.5 points.
Greg Panek's teamz won the incredibly competitive Walter Hagen Flight with 27.
The Bobby Jones Flight winner was James Gravitt's team with 28.5 points.
Sharing first in the Harry Vardon Flight with 23.5 points were Terry Coffing's team and Mark Brandon's team..
Tom Lott's team won the Tom Morris Sr. Flight.
Closest-to-the-pin honors were garnered by John Richardson, John Ingram, Marty Barrett and Jeff Silvestri on Friday, with Saturday's winners being Ted Chapman, Lawrence Chan, John Ingram and Mike Vespi.
