Appointed judges capture election

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 | 9:45 a.m.

Two District Court judges appointed by Gov. Kenny Guinn earlier this year were also chosen by voters Tuesday.

District Court Judge Elizabeth "Betsy" Gonzalez, appointed by Guinn in July to Department 11, finished with 234,374 votes to 197,434 for her opponent, former assistant district attorney and Juvenile Court hearing master Mike Davidson.

Former president of the board of Clark County Legal Services, Gonzalez said 20 years as a trial lawyer made her especially qualified for the Department 11 bench, which primarily handles civil cases.

Gonzalez has also served as a member of the state Ethics Commission. Gonzalez succeeds Michael Douglas, who became a state Supreme Court justice.

In Department 1, District Judge Ken Cory had 216,376 or 51 percent, defeating Family Court truancy master Bill Henderson, who finished with 204,868 or 49 percent.

Cory, 60, was appointed by Guinn in January to replace Gene Porter, who resigned in October 2003.
