CU's Barnett, Tharp will keep their jobs
Calling it the right thing to do, the president of the University of Colorado reinstated suspended football coach Gary Barnett and said no one will lose their jobs for one of the worst college athletics scandals in years.
Barnett and athletics director Richard Tharp will remain in place to help implement the changes.
Weaver loses game
Jered Weaver lost for the first time this season, allowing seven runs Thursday night in Long Beach State's 8-5 defeat against Miami. Weaver (14-1), who entered leading the NCAA in wins and ERA (1.25), gave up eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out 11.
49ers sign Conway
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a one-year contract with Curtis Conway. The 49ers were desperate for help after losing leading receivers Terrell Owens and Tai Streets earlier in the offseason.
Scott to coach Hornets
Byron Scott will be the next coach of the New Orleans Hornets. Scott said Thursday on ESPN, where he works as an analyst, that he has accepted the job. Scott, 44, coached the Nets to the NBA finals the past two seasons, with losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.
Those not on the list include Nolan Richardson, Steve Lavin and Matt Doherty, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported today.
Smarty works out
Smarty Jones put in his one and only workout before the Belmont Stakes this morning, cruising seven-eighths of a mile at Philadelphia Park with Stewart Elliott aboard. Smarty Jones will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown champion in the Belmont next Saturday.
U.S. shooting trials held
Matt Emmons qualified for the Athens Olympics in a second event when he finished first in prone rifle at the U.S. shooting trials.
Mike Anti of Winterville, N.C., also qualified for Athens by finishing second in prone rifle with a score of 1,996.6, more than two points behind Emmons.
