The Las Vegas Sun Summer Camp Fund recently honored nine groups whose support has been key in sending thousands of children to camp over the years.
"Without the generosity of these organizations, it would be difficult for us to keep up with the increasing number of students who would benefit from camp," said Brian Cram, director of the Greenspun Family Foundation, which administers the camp fund.
The camp fund program has grown from providing 100 scholarships to summer camp at its inception in 1970 to paying the way for 1,000 students last year, Cram said.
The bulk of the fund comes from small donations of community members who give year after year, he said. The average cost of a camp scholarship is $300.
The donor groups that were honored included Doyne Medical Clinic, Southwest Medical Associates and Rainbow Medical Centers, which provided medical clinics to ensure campers received the required physicals. Creel Printing and Publishing Co. has provided printed information about the camps and fund, and Jewelry Salon at the Four Seasons ran a special event to raise money and donated jewelry to raffle.
Boys & Girls Club of Henderson made more spots available at camps when the demand grew too great. Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and Speedway Children's Charities have provided infusions of funds when needed. The Clark County School District helps distribute information to potential campers.
