Williams, Capriati win at French Open
Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati advanced today to the third round of French Open, which is better than any American man did.
The No. 4-seeded Williams survived a sluggish start to beat Jelena Kostanic 6-3, 6-3. No. 7 Capriati, who won the tournament in 2001, defeated Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3.
With Andy Roddick's loss Wednesday, no U.S. men reached the third round, the first time that's happened at a Grand Slam event in 31 years.
UNLV advances five
UNLV's women's track & field team is sending five athletes to this weekend's NCAA West Regionals, hosted by Cal State Northridge. Participating for the Rebels are juniors Christine Spence, Halima DeCree, Kiyota Reed, Miesha McClendon and senior Tiffany Smith.
FC Porto wins crown
FC Porto won the European Champions Cup for the second time, beating AS Monaco 3-0 in the final. FC Porto, the Portuguese champion, also won Europe's top club tournament in 1987, when it defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in the final at Vienna, Austria.
Hessler recovering
Former Colorado quarterback John Hessler checked out of a hospital and returned to his parents' home -- another milestone in his long recovery from a head injury.
