Murphy files report of missing handgun

Thursday, May 27, 2004 | 11:05 a.m.

Sandy Murphy, waiting to be retried on charges of killing casino executive Ted Binion, filed a police report Wednesday claiming a .38 caliber handgun is missing from her Las Vegas apartment.

In a copy of the report, obtained by the Sun, Murphy told police the Browning semi-automatic handgun belongs to a 54-year-old California man she identified as George Jackson.

She reported she last saw the weapon two weeks ago.

Murphy told police she heard a noise in her apartment on East Silverado Ranch about 5 a.m. Monday and went to grab the gun in her nightstand, but it wasn't there.

There was no forced entry in her apartment and nothing else was missing, she reported.

Murphy explained that she believes someone was in her apartment about 4 p.m. last Saturday and used her bathroom. Murphy noticed that a cinnamon air freshener had been moved.

She told police she waited until Wednesday to file a burglary report so that she could consult with her attorney.

The firearm, which is valued at $387, is registered in California, the report said.

Murphy did not explain what relationship she has with Jackson, who lists a Long Beach address in the police report.

Murphy and her co-defendant, Rick Tabish, are scheduled to be retried Oct. 13 on charges of killing Binion on Sept. 17, 1998, and stealing his valuables.

Their May 2000 convictions in the first trial were overturned by the state Supreme Court last July.
