Nielsen awarded MWC honor

UNLV junior right fielder Eric Nielsen was named Tuesday as the Mountain West Conference's player of the year.
Nielsen, who played locally at Silverado High, became the first MWC player to lead the league in batting average, RBIs and home runs in the overall and conference only statistics. In league play, he hit .459 with 57 RBIs and 13 HRs.
Joining him on the All-MWC team were teammates Brent Johnson, Jake Vose, David Seccombe and Ben Scheinbaum.
Tony Gwynn was named coach of the year after leading San Diego State to the regular-season championship in his second year at his alma mater.
The Aztecs (33-27) won the league title with a 19-9 record.
San Diego State's Scott Shoemaker was named pitcher of the year. The Aztecs had 10 selections on the all-conference team.
