LV firm penalized by Iowa authorities

Tuesday, May 25, 2004 | 10:34 a.m.

A Las Vegas-based company that offers $200 worth of gas coupons in exchange for a debit of $1.95 for shipping and handling from a checking account has been barred from operating in Iowa.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller barred Continuity Partners Inc. from doing business in his state after it solicited Iowans to try its products and services such as gas coupons and a calling card. Miller said in a statement that the customers would provide their bank account numbers to cover the $1.95 shipping and handling charge, but would reject the other offers.

Customers told Miller's office that their bank accounts were debited for more than $1.95 and they had trouble getting refunds.

The Iowa attorney general's office received 11 complaints from consumers saying unauthorized charges would show on their bank accounts or debit accounts and they had a difficult time getting refunds.

He said some customers were issued refund checks, which bounced when they were cashed.

Continuity Partners could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
