WASHINGTON -- Nevada received $2.2 million Monday from the Interior Department and cooperating organizations for conservation projects throughout the state.

The money's source was split between $982,000 from the department and just over $1.2 million from cooperating partners such as Clark County, conservation groups and even the state's Boy Scouts.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area will get $492,000 to control new noxious weed threats to the Colorado River. The grants include $246,000 in federal money, $150,000 from Clark County and $96,000 from the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

The Bureau of Land Management's Las Vegas Field Office will receive $226,000 to restore desert tortoise habitat, with $138,000 coming from partners. Clark County and the Boy Scouts each gave $20,000 for the effort.

Other projects in Elko and Ely will remove abandoned mining claim markers from public lands, treat 3,000 acres of sagebrush and construct two water collection areas for big game wildlife, according to the department.
