Fare increase dropped

Monday, May 24, 2004 | 9:06 a.m.

American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways on Friday dropped a fare increase of as much as $20 one way in some U.S. cities after Northwest Airlines refused to match the higher prices. The increases were tied to higher fuel prices. The big airlines have now failed in four attempts to impose nationwide fare increases to cover fuel costs.
