Policy will be created to handle ‘hazard’ properties

Las Vegas Neighborhood Services was given the OK Wednesday from the City Council to create a policy for dealing with "imminent hazard" properties similar to Sky-Vue Mobile Home Park.
The policy, which will have to come back to the council for final approval, includes taking action against irresponsible rental property owners and for the city to recoup taxpayer funds spent to take such action and to relocate tenants.
The measure passed 5-0 with Mayor Oscar Goodman out of the room at the time of the vote.
The decision comes two weeks after the council voted to spend an additional $100,000 on expenses related to closing of the dilapidated Sky-Vue park on Owens Avenue near Main Street, bringing the city's total spending on the closure to $140,000.
In the wake of that incident, the city has begun taking a closer look at similar aging rental properties, among them, Shady Acres at 1001 N. Main St., at the corner of Washington Avenue.
