Firefighters heat up for calendar

Auditions for firefighters who want to be included in the 2005/2006 Las Vegas Firefighters Calendar, the proceeds of which benefit some of Southern Nevada's most deserving children, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday poolside at Plush, the new nightclub inside the J.W. Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd.

Women in attendance will have a scorecard in hand to rate the firefighter contestants. Firefighters are competing for a spot in the calendar, which is sold at Virgin Megastores and Border Bookstores.

All proceeds benefit Project Sunshine of Nevada, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a nurturing, fun, educational, and safe camping experience for children with critical illnesses, and for children who have been abandoned, abused or neglected.

Tickets are $50; $60 at the door.

Homebound seniors get special treat

Celebrity Chef Gustav Mauler will cook up something special for the L'Dor Homebound Senior Outreach program from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane.

L'Dor V'Dor offers an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones.

The event will offer lunch, entertainment and socialization for homebound seniors all over Las Vegas.

The program is free and open to the public. Homebound seniors of all religious faiths are welcome; transportation is provided when needed.

RTC to name contest winners

The awards ceremony for the Reflections in Motion Youth Literacy Contest and ATC/RTC Youth Art Contest will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Regional Transportation administrative building, 600 S. Grand Central Parkway.

The RTC will recognize young artists and writers for their award-winning art and literary pieces and will unveil the winning entries.

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society

will present slide presentations and members will share their telescopes to view objects in the night sky starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center. The Women's Group of Chabad

Two free workshops for businesses

are scheduled in Henderson in coming weeks, the office of Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., announced Tuesday. The first workshop will help entrepreneurs learn how to start a successful business and will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 26 at the Paseo Verde Library. To enroll, call (702) 895-4270.
