Area cities to vote on budgets Tuesday
Monday, May 17, 2004 | 9:36 a.m.
Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City residents would see no tax increases in the coming fiscal year under proposed budgets all scheduled to be voted on after public hearings Tuesday.
The Henderson and North Las Vegas proposed budgets for the fiscal year beginning July 1 call for adding city staff, with an emphasis in both cities on public-safety employees.
Boulder City's proposed 2004-2005 budget sets aside $1.4 million for debt payments on the city's controversial Boulder Creek Golf Club and includes no money for employee pay raises or additional employees.
The public hearing on Boulder City's proposed $46.1 million budget is scheduled for 7 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 401 California Ave.
The proposed budget includes an $18.6 million general fund, which pays for general government services including police, fire and public works. The general fund for the current year is $19.7 million, but that figure was inflated by about $3 million by subsidies and contract and lawsuit settlements all related to Boulder Creek.
In North Las Vegas, the public hearing on that city's $406.6 million spending plan is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 2200 Civic Center Drive . The budget calls for adding almost 71 positions, including 50 in the police and fire departments.
North Las Vegas' proposed budget is about $57 million higher than the current budget, thanks in part to additional monies from increased property value assessments, which affect tax revenue, and higher-than-expected income from building and planning permits.
In Henderson, the public hearing on the budget is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Henderson Convention Center.
Henderson's proposed $358 million budget calls for adding 49 positions, including 15 in public safety. Those additions, if approved, would bring the number of city employees to 2,036.
