Durango star to play at Western Illinois
Derek Thomas is calling on his Las Vegas roots to find his latest recruit.
Durango's Allen McFarland has signed a letter of intent to play for Thomas, a former UNLV assistant coach, at Western Illinois beginning next season. McFarland, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, averaged 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game for the Blazers last season. McFarland played one season at Durango after transferring from Western.
McFarland is the second Durango player to receive a basketball scholarship this season, joining guard Tywain McTyer (Florida Atlantic). Durango's Houston Power is also being recruited, notably by Wyoming and UNLV, and could commit by next week.
Jockey still critical
Jockey Rick Wilson was still in critical condition with head injuries Monday, two days after falling from his horse at Pimlico, but his agent said he is improving.
Wilson flipped head over heels to the ground after his mount, Advance to Go, stumbled out of the gate during the second race on Saturday. Wilson was motionless, face down, as the field rounded the first turn. He was airlifted to the University of Maryland Trauma Center.
Reds release Haynes
Pitcher Jimmy Haynes was put on waivers Monday by the Cincinnati Reds, who would be responsible for the rest of his $2.5 million salary if he doesn't get claimed.
Broncos cut Beuerlein
The Denver Broncos waived Steve Beuerlein on Monday to give the 39-year-old quarterback time to decide whether he wants to return for an 18th season.
