CARSON CITY -- David Schumann, a 65-year-old retired real estate agent from Minden, will lead the ticket of 25 Nevada candidates of the Independent American Party on the election ballot in November.
Schumann is the party's choice for U.S. Senate to oppose Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and he said he hopes to have a chance to debate Reid at candidate nights around the state.
The IAP filed its list of candidates Friday with the Secretary of State's Office.
Running for the congressional seats will be Brad Barnhill of Las Vegas in the 1st District, a seat now held by Rep. Shelley Berkeley, D-Nev; Thomas Jefferson of Elko in the 2nd District where the incumbent is Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., and Dick O'Dell of Las Vegas in the 3rd District, now represented by Jon Porter, a Republican.
Schumann is calling for tougher immigration enforcement.
"We need to protect our borders," he said. "We must require the federal government to deport all illegal aliens including those more than 20 miles inside this country."
He said once the undocumented worker gets past the 20-mile line, there is little done to catch and deport him. "The Republicans and Democrats care more about getting votes than stopping the flow of illegal aliens into our country.
"We won't have a country if we don't protect our borders," he said.
