First Friday Funfest begins at 6 p.m.
First Friday May Funfest will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today in the area from Colorado and Coolidge avenues and from Main Street to Casino Center Boulevard.
The event features bands performing on two Showmobile stages, free rides to all First Friday stops on the Arts Buses and food and drink vendors. Shuttles will provide free transportation every 15 minutes to and from the County Government Center's free alternate parking site.
First Friday Festival streets will remain closed until 3 a.m. Saturday.

Spring Kids Fair scheduled Saturday
The Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs' Spring Kids Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Freedom Park, Mojave Road and Washington Avenue.
The event will include complimentary food and games, McGruff the crime-fighting dog, finger print I.D. kits for the kids, and as a special feature, the Metro Police K-9 unit is scheduled for an 11 a.m. demonstration.

Sunrise will host cancer basics classes
Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center offers a cancer basics class from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday in the hospital's education room of the Impatient Oncology Unit, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway, E300, as an educational and supportive introduction to cancer for the newly diagnosed and their families.
The free program is designed to teach patients and their support network the basics of self-care and coping skills, and the class is taught by a certified oncology nurse.
Topics include: an overview of cancer and how it affects the body, understanding pathology reports, nutrition, and fatigue. Also discussed are coping skills, survivorship, and treatment options such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, biotherapy, hormones, and surgical procedures.

Former ambassador to give UNLV talk
Sandy Vogelgesang, former U.S. ambassador to Nepal, will discuss Women and U.S. Foreign Policy from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus Services Building, Room 209.
The event, which is being sponsored by the Women's Research Institute of Nevada, is free and open to the public.

The Mexican Patriotic Committee's
Cinco De Mayo celebration will be held at Freedom Park is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5; children ages 11 under are free. Call 649-1198.
