Retirement tips offered to seniors

The Las Vegas Senior Citizens Advisory Board will present for working seniors who are getting close to retirement a pre-retirement seminar from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.

Speakers from Social Security and the Nevada Division for Aging Services will discuss all aspects of Social Security and Medicare.

St. Rose to check the uninsured

As part of the Cover the Uninsured Week, St. Rose Dominican Hospitals will provide $5 cholesterol screenings and blood pressure checks from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rose de Lima Campus, 102 E. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson, and Friday at the Siena campus, 3001 St. Rose Parkway, Henderson.

Covering the Uninsured Week is a series of national and local activities designed to sensitize the public and opinion leaders to the plight of the more than 43 million Americans who are uninsured, including 8.5 million children. More than half of the uninsured Nevadans are working families.

I Can Cope class planned

As part of the I Can Cope series, the American Cancer Society will hold a free class from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, 657 Town Center Drive.

I Can Cope is a series of classes taught by medical professionals or community representatives. The sessions help dispel cancer myths by presenting facts and answers to cancer-related questions concerning: Learning about cancer and cancer treatment, Keeping well in mind and body, Understanding feelings and relationships, Discovering resources and celebrating life.

Music, food set at arts festival

In celebration of Arts in Downtown Las Vegas, the First Friday Fun Fest will offer eclectic bands performing from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday on two Showmobile stages -- one on Colorado Avenue between Third and Main streets and the other on Boulder Avenue between Casino Center Boulevard and Main.

The event will also feature a variety of food booths from neighborhood restaurants, a beer and wine garden, gallery openings, studio previews and the urban ambiance of a downtown arts scene.

The street festival will feature musical groups Killian's Angels, Bluesology, and Gregg Young and the 2nd Street Band.
