Candidates who filed to run for office in Northern Nevada on Monday included the state's leading U.S. Senate candidates.
Richard Ziser, a prominent backer of the state's voter-passed constitutional ban on same-sex marriages, filed to seek the Republican Party nomination to run against U.S. Senator Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Ziser said most Nevadans believe the nuclear repository at Yucca Mountain can't be stopped. "And if we're going to take on the responsibility for Yucca Mountain, we'd better benefit from it in some way," he said, calling for negotiation with the federal government instead of lawsuits.
Reid's candidacy was submitted to the Secretary of State's Office Monday by staff member Sean Sinclair, who said the nuclear waste issue would be the "defining difference" between the two candidates.
"Senator Reid has been years fighting Yucca Mountain and he's not going to roll over like the Republican Party has this week," Sinclair said.
Assembly Minority Leader Lynn Hettrick, R-Gardnerville, filed for a seventh term and said he the state should be calling for negotiations with the federal government to get benefits.
"I am absolutely convinced there's no significant risk. I am absolutely convinced that because of that, we're going to get it, and I'm absolutely convinced if we don't negotiate soon, we're going to get nothing," Hettrick said.
For many of the candidates for state office, the last session's tax package is the big issue.
One of those candidates is Sen. Mike McGinness, R-Fallon, who filed Monday to seek a fourth term in the Senate. He previously served four years in the Assembly. McGinness, 57, general manager of a radio station in Fallon, said there is "definitely going to be clean-up" of the tax bill. He cited as an example the entertainment tax that affected some small performers who should have been exempt.
McGinness, chairman of the Senate Taxation Committee, also said the Legislature will take a look at an exemption that allows venues with less than 300 seats to avoid the live entertainment tax.
Assemblyman John Carpenter, R-Elko, submitted his candidacy for his tenth term. The 73-year-old Carpenter said people in his district "loved" him after he voted against the $833 tax package at the last session.
"I don't think there will be many tax deals" in the 2005 Legislature, he said.
Carpenter is third in seniority in the Assembly behind John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain, and Morse Arberry, D-Las Vegas.
Democrat Bonnie Parnell of Carson City filed in an attempt to stage a political comeback. A Democrat, she served two terms in the Assembly representing District 40 and then retired. She is expected to oppose Republican Ron Knecht, who plans to file today.
