Woman and her dog escape fire

A candle in a bedroom started a two-alarm fire that caused $30,000 in damage at an apartment complex on Durango Drive near Sahara Avenue Tuesday night, firefighters said.

Clark County firefighters confined the two-alarm fire to one apartment at Whispering Lakes, 2606 S. Durango Drive, about 10:20 p.m. A woman who occupied the apartment and her pet dog escaped as black smoke billowed from her home, firefighters said.

The woman was treated by emergency personnel and released. The dog was not injured.

At least 10 other residents were evacuated from nearby apartments.

Gunfight, car chase follow bar robbery

Two men robbed a bar at Tropicana and Eastern avenues Tuesday morning, got into a gunfight with a private investigator and rolled their getaway car before one of them stole another motorist's car at gunpoint, Metro Police said.

It all started with a 9:30 a.m. robbery at the Dispensary Lounge, 2452 E. Tropicana Ave., police said.

While the robbers were trying to escape in a stolen Chrysler convertible, a private investigator who had been in the bar came outside and attempted to stop the pair, Lt. Ted Snodgrass of Metro's robbery section said.

The passenger in the convertible fired at the man and he fired back several times, hitting the trunk and back portion of the car.

The driver hit a pole while trying to flee and the car flipped onto its roof, Snodgrass said.

One of the robbers then carjacked a person sitting in a fast food line and drove off in the victim's Ford Focus, which police found later. The other man hopped a wall and ran away, he said.

Anyone with information about the case can call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Metro detectives at 228-3591.

Roads blocked 11 hours for standoff

Henderson Police blocked off a neighborhood near Pecos and Warm Springs roads for 11 hours during a standoff with a man who was wanted for questioning because he had been arguing loudly with his roommate Tuesday.

Police said a woman was arguing with the man in a home about 7 a.m. and the noise prompted neighbors to call Henderson Police, Henderson Police spokesman Keith Paul said. When officers arrived, the man refused to leave the home.

A Henderson SWAT team entered the home and found the man hiding in an attic about 6 p.m., police said. The roommate told police that the man may have been on drugs. Officers apparently searched the home for drugs after the arrest.

Police did not identify the man.

Small fire strikes Harrah's pool area

A small fire near the pool at Harrah's around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday was intentionally set, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

No serious injuries were reported, but part of the Strip hotel was evacuated. Leinbach said there was a report of one person who suffered from exposure to smoke, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The fire was in an area where a few deck chairs were being stored, and it was extinguished by hotel staff before firefighters arrived, Harrah's Entertainment spokesman Gary Thompson said.

Leinbach said fire investigators determined that people caused the fire.

"Somebody set it, but we can't call it arson because we don't know the motive," Leinbach said.

Thompson said 14 rooms were evacuated, the rooms above the fire from the fourth to the 17th floors.

Thompson said smoke got into two rooms, but the fire did not spread.

The casino and restaurant operations were not disrupted by the fire, and all hotel operations were back to normal by 1:30 p.m., officials said.

Hit-and-run fugitive arrested

A Riverside, Calif., man wanted in connection with a hit-and-run accident in California that killed a 26-year-old woman was arrested in Las Vegas Tuesday.

William Daulton, 24, was found staying with relatives in the 8000 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South by the Fugitive Investigative Strike Team.

Daulton is charged with driving at speeds of more than 100 mph. Authorities said he ran a red light, striking a Jeep, which rolled over, killing the driver.

Daulton was booked into the Clark County Jail and is awaiting extradition to California, officials said.
