Teaching the Holocaust scheduled

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in cooperation with the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will present "Teaching the Holocaust," from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the International Gaming Institute on the UNLV campus.

The conference is designed specifically for students studying to be teachers.

Sessions during the day include: An overview of Holocaust history; Methodological guidelines for teaching about the Holocaust; Using technology to teach about the Holocaust; Incorporating literature into a study of the Holocaust; and a presentation by Holocaust scholars and a Holocaust survivor.

Educational materials from the Holocaust Memorial Museum will be distributed to all participants.

Home buyers park event planned

BankWest of Nevada is sponsoring House Party in the Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Freedom Park, Mojave Road at Washington Avenue.

Residents will learn about community resources, down payment assistance, first-time buyer programs, special needs assistance and new loan products from the community's leading financial institutions, nonprofit groups and housing agencies.

The event will also offer games, prizes for children, demonstrations by the Metro Police Mounted Patrol and K-9 units, skate board park facilities, and a household item swap meet will provide entertainment for families while adults talk to home-buying experts.

Annual walk for MS set Saturday

The annual Multiple Sclerosis Walk is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hughes Center, 3800 Howard Hughes Parkway.

Participants will walk about 3 kilometers along a route that begins and ends at the Hughes Center. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning, water and fruit will be available along the way and Capriotti's will provide lunch after the walk.

Registration and contribution forms are available at all Courtesy auto dealerships. Pledges also can be made by logging on to www.nationalmssociety.org.

Neighborhood awards scheduled

Applications are being accepted through April 9 for the 2004 Neighborhood Impact Awards that will be presented at the sixth annual Neighborhood Congress May 15 at the East Las Vegas Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.

Nominees may include businesses, organizations and individual citizens who have made significant impacts on their neighborhoods. A separate award category honors youth or youth organizations that have made outstanding contributions to their neighborhoods.

Nomination applications are available through the neighborhood services offices at the county and Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.

The nominee's name, address and telephone number must be included as well as a written explanation detailing why you are nominating the person or organization being nominated for an award.
