Search begins for new judge to replace Douglas

Monday, March 29, 2004 | 8:47 a.m.

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The search is under way to find a replacement for District Judge Michael Douglas of Las Vegas after his appointment to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Ron Titus, director of the state Administrative Office of the Courts, said Friday there is no timetable for filing applications or for the state Judicial Selection Committee to meet.

He said his office is preparing postcards to be mailed to the more than 5,000 attorneys in Nevada to make sure they know that a judicial vacancy exists in Clark County. The office will then set the deadline applications.

The selection committee, headed by Chief Justice Miriam Shearing of the Nevada Supreme Court, interviews the candidates and recommends three to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who makes the final selection.

Douglas will be sworn in as a justice May 3 in Carson City.

Any person who is selected to replace Douglas would serve until January 2005.
