Letter: U.N. should probe corruption

Friday, March 26, 2004 | 9:01 a.m.

This is in reference to Sun Editor Brian Greenspun's March 14 Where I Stand column headlined, "Leaving U.N. a bad idea."

When I was a teenager I remember getting up very early to watch the two special trains pass by carrying delegates to the founding meeting of the U.N. in San Francisco. The U.N. birthplace at the Opera House was a "must see" on my first visit to San Francisco.

In the years which have intervened, my attitude toward the U.N. is ambivalent. Eleven of those years were spent as a civilian overseas, where I could watch the U.N. in action.

My attitude would improve if the U.N. would do something about the almost epidemic corruption that prevails. Yes, living costs in New York are high, but stop the sale of votes in the General Assembly. For starters, Secretary Kofi Anan should account for the more than $50 billion due Iraq in the Oil for Peace program. The money made its way into French and Russian banks and hasn't been seen since.
