Rules on taverns discussed

Almost 30 North Las Vegas residents and business owners examined details concerning the North Las Vegas Tavern License Ordinance and Moratorium at a public meeting Tuesday night.

Principal Planner for North Las Vegas, Marc Jordan, presented a slide show comparing current tavern regulations in North Las Vegas with those in Henderson, Las Vegas, unincorporated Clark County, Mesquite and Boulder City.

Proposed changes were also discussed, including a proposal that taverns "must be at a distance greater than 1,500 feet from all existing or approved churches, schools, city-owned parks and child care facilities licensed for more than 12 children."

Under the current rules, taverns must be 1,500 feet from each other and 400 feet from schools. There are currently no rules regarding the distance of taverns from parks, residential areas or day-care facilities.

Las Vegas requires taverns to be 1,500 feet from parks, day-care facilities and schools.

Henderson requires taverns to be 2,000 feet from schools, 500 feet from residential areas and 500 feet from day-care facilities.

City staffers will take the comments and revise the ordinance, which then will be the subject of a hearing April 13. The Planning Commission would then consider the ordinance April 14, city spokeswoman Brenda Johnson said.

Final action could be take by May 19, which is when the moratorium ends, Johnson said.
