Man shot in robbery attempt in parking lot of Orleans

A man was nearly shot in the head while trying to fend off robbers in the parking lot of the Orleans hotel-casino at 4500 W. Tropicana Ave. early this morning, Metro Police spokesman Jose Montoya said.

The attempted robbery occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. today.

The victim and a woman were walking through the southwest parking lot near Cameron Street and Tropicana Avenue when a small red car with a broken windshield pulled up to them, police said.

The passenger approached the woman and tried to grab her purse. The couple began struggling with him and the would-be robber pulled out a gun and fired one shot at the man, grazing his forehead.

The victim was conscious and talking when medics arrived, Montoya said. He had reportedly been released from the hospital by 8 a.m.

The suspects drove off without stealing anything from the couple, Montoya said.

A spokesperson for the Orleans did not return calls seeking comment this morning.
